Discography
Discography is
an organized list of music recordings with background
information on registration, such as the dates were made and the
identity of the perpetrators. The term "discography" is
sometimes used to describe the study of sound recordings. Many
books contain extensive discographies that belong to various
artists and genres, and you can also find examples alone.
The term is a portmanteau of "hard" as the disks used for sound
recordings, and "writing", a greek suffix that refers to
writing. "Songs" has a precedent in "bibliography, a list of
books. Any type of sound recording can be covered in a
discography, including records, tapes, CDs and digital
recordings, with the kind usually seen on the sidelines ahead of
the player. A classic example is a collection of all records of
a single artist or group, usually arranged in chronological
order.
See a complete list allows people to see that the records are
gone, and the list can also be used to highlight the rare
recordings, or changes in style of music. Once complete,
discographies include everything from B-sides of greatest-hits
album, and compilation of a full version can be time consuming,
especially in the case of a prolific artist or a group like the
Beatles. Music can also scholars do not agree with the contents
of some discographies, and the scientific debate can get vicious
at times. In addition to compiling lists of music performed by
particular people, you can also create a discography that
includes a genre or theme, such as African-American spirituals
and music on the water.
Discography may also be filled by the composer, which may be
useful for those who want to compare the multiple registrations
of the same work to see how different musicians and conductors
interpret. To detect such composers as Beethoven and Mozart, a
discography can quickly become very intimidating and awkward,
since so many musicians have recorded performance of their
works.
biographers music almost always include a discography of their
works in the index for the reference of the readers, as do the
scholars and historians who write about music, with a
discography that serves as a list of sources and materials used
in the preparation of text. Bands often release records with
their records or on their websites for the benefit of the fans,
and sites that collect and distribute information on music can
have a repository of discographies as well.
