There are certainly many ways to categorize the music, depending on the context under discussion, or the time we examined. In any case, these divisions are to be considered arbitrary because, in addition to the low interest they occupy in the eyes of the protagonists of the music itself, their main characteristic is only to provide a starting point for any study of this kind.

We have chosen here to retrace the course of history, to examine the various aspects of the types of melody known today, but which are only the tip of quell'iceberg which is the traditional Irish music. Later we will return, following the links between music and dance forms that preceded them. These levels will allow us to formulate, in a third part, some opinions about what today can be defined as traditional music.
